Jerry Gray is re-joining the Tennessee Titans. This time, he'll be working as the franchise's defensive coordinator.
Gray, an assistant for four seasons with the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans, on Saturday was named the team's defensive coordinator, John Glennon of The Tennessean reported.
Gray is replacing Chuck Cecil, who was fired by former head coach Jeff Fisher last month.
Glennon wrote that Munchak wanted Gray in place before making other defensive coaching hires. The team does not currently have a defensive line coach.
"I've targeted people that I'm interested in," Munchak said. "But I was waiting to make sure (Gray) had input. ... I want to make sure (Gray) gets the right people that fit."
A possibility is former Houston defensive coordinator Frank Bush, contacted by Munchak prior to Gray's hiring.
Gray, named University of Texas defensive backs coach last month, spent last season as the Seattle Seahawks' defensive backs coach. He served two years for the Titans as a quality control coach and two years as the team's defensive backs coach.
"I think the fact he's been here before and that this is something he's familiar with and believes in is a positive," Munchak said. "Also if there is a situation with the lockout (where offseason preparation is shortened), he'll be a great guy to have in place. . . .
"I think he's a great leader and a good teacher. We played against him in Buffalo quite a few times, and I thought he did a great job the way he ran the defense. As an offensive coach, I was impressed with how he did that and how his guys played."
