Derek Jeter's Fifth Gold Glove Evidence of Award Gone Wrong

SEATTLE -- Did the American League Gold Glove awards announced Tuesday honor the best in defense in the league for 2010?

In some cases, yes; but certainly not in all cases.

The fifth Gold Glove for Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter certainly raised some eyebrows when the awards were handed out.

Jeter was, a few years ago, a fine shortstop. But at age 36, he's no longer in his prime, and as much as his offense sagged in 2010 -- career lows in batting average (.270) and OPS (.710) -- his defense matched that sag for sag.

The Yankee captain won his fifth Gold Glove despite statistical suggestions that he's past his prime defensively. He had an UZR (ultimate zone rating) of -4.7, a statistic that suggests he was well below average this year.
