MLS Ensured CONCACAF Semifinalist as Salt Lake and Columbus Drawn Together

concacaf champions leagueMajor League Soccer is guaranteed to have a CONCACAF Champions League semifinalist for the first time since the tournament's expansion three years ago thanks to a very fortunate draw that pitted Real Salt Lake and the Columbus Crew together in the quarterfinals.

The good news for the league doesn't end there -- the winner will face a Central American team in the semifinals. The four Mexican clubs, which all advanced past the group stage as usual, were grouped together in the other half of the draw.

The finals in the two previous editions of the Champions League have been all-Mexican affairs, and no Mexican team has ever been eliminated from the competition by a foreign club.

Real Salt Lake is the first MLS side to win its first round group. It finished 4-1-1 in a quartet that included Cruz Azul, Toronto FC and Panama's Árabe Unido.
