Umpire Watch: Andrus' Steal of Second, Granderson's Hit by Pitch

Angel Hernandez rules Elvis Andrus safeControversial calls have become as much a part of the Major League Baseball postseason as Derek Jeter and patriotic bunting. In Umpire Watch, we intend to document those calls, at least until commissioner Bud Selig puts us out of business.

The biggest umpiring talking point after Saturday night is probably going to be Derryl Cousins' strike zone during Game 1 of the NLCS. Both Roy Halladay and Tim Lincecum seemed unhappy with it at various points, which is noteworthy, but not for our purposes. This is about expanded instant replay, and the calling of balls and strikes doesn't really enter into that equation.

For what it's worth, Cousins is known for having a tight zone, and he didn't seem particularly harsh on either of the aces in this one.

The Situation: Elvis Andrus is on first base with no one out and the score tied at 0-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes is facing off with Rangers third baseman Michael Young.
