CHESTER, Pa. -- For one night, a small crowd at an American soccer game was probably a good thing. Only 8,823 fans showed up at PPL Park for Tuesday evening's friendly between the U.S. and Colombia, and what they saw was a lousy advertisement for the sport that ended in a very fitting 0-0 draw.
The tie extended the Americans' winless streak against South American sides to nine games (0-7-2), dating back more than three years to a March 2007 exhibition win over Ecuador. On Tuesday, it seemed that the U.S. could play Colombia for another three years and not find the back of the net.
The first shot on goal didn't come until Stuart Holden forced a save from long range in the 53rd minute. Michael Bradley's tap-in in the 72nd was called back immediately because Jozy Altidore was offside, and a few corner kicks amounted to nothing. In the 86th, debutant Eric Lichaj hit a low, precise cross that Altidore headed straight to Colombian backstop Faryd Mondragon.
