David Beckham's weekend was much, much improved over the previous one, during which the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder suffered through an emphatic 2-0 loss to visiting New York and a run-in with a heckler that became internet gold.
This time, the video is far more flattering. Beckham scored his first goal in more than a year on Sunday night, a trademark free kick, as L.A. defeated cross-hall rival Chivas USA, 2-1, at the Home Depot Center. The victory vaulted the Galaxy (16-6-5) back atop the MLS standings and, presumably, gave the beleaguered Beckham something to smile about for the first time in a while.
His return to the field following a difficult Achilles injury was overshadowed by a headline-grabbing prostitution scandal, and the Galaxy's capitulation in the high-profile match against the Red Bulls on Sept. 24 just added to the misery. To top it off, Beckham was sick last week, according to Galaxy coach Bruce Arena.
