That being the case, the 49ers have to feel pretty good about themselves, or at least about their division. The West is far from having a dominant team. St. Louis, which won one game last year, and Seattle, which won five games a year ago, are atop the division with 6-8 records with two weeks left.
Which means San Francisco is in reasonable shape to win the division's berth in the playoffs despite all the trouble -- the firing of offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, three players walking away from the team during training camp, and a troubled season for quarterback Alex Smith -- that has visited the team.
That being said, the 49ers are going to have to do at least two about-face performances if they're going to play deep into January.
First they have to beat the Rams Sunday in St. Louis. San Francisco did beat St. Louis on the West Coast, but that game was hardly convincing, and the 49ers have won just once on the road this year.
