Reed, who agreed to a contract Thursday night, met with the media Friday and said he'd been told he would be with the 49ers for the rest of the season.
The 49ers have been without Nedney for two weeks, since hurting his plant leg with a contusion and a sprain on Nov. 14., and there was some hope that he was getting close to a return.
He's due to undergo more testing on the knee on Monday, but San Francisco's vice president for personnel Trent Baalke said a Nedney return in 2010 doesn't look promising. The injury originally was described as both a sprain and a contusion on his plant leg.
The 49ers went for two weeks with Shane Andrus but Reed, let go by the Pittsburgh Steelers, was signed this week after Andrus had one miss and one kick blocked Monday in a win over the Cardinals. And when Nedney tried to kick midweek he had what coach Mike Singletary called a little tightness.
That led them to give a shot to Reed, a nine-year pro with two Super Bowl rings. He was 15-for-22 on field goals with the Steelers before being cut Nov. 16. For his career, he's hit 81.9 percent of his field goals, the 15th-best all-time.
"I was a little dejected (about being cut) and I still kind of have questions about it, but that's old news now,'' Reed told the San Francisco media Friday. "This is new, and it's good to see new faces and a team that is hungry no matter what their record is. I'm glad to be a part of it.''
Reed said he turned the 49ers down when they called asking him to be a fill-in for Nedney. But the fact that Nedney will be out for perhaps the rest of the season made all the difference when San Francisco called a second time.
