As Cortland Finnegan sees it, he has been miscast.Finnegan, the Tennessee Titans' cornerback who has been widely criticized and called dirty since an on-field altercation this past Sunday with Houston Texans' wide receiver Andre Johnson, said the label is unfair.
Dirty? Finnegan said it's not applicable.
"It's a word that's been used loosely, ignorant sometimes,'' Finnegan told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. "But at the same time guys around the league have been fined more than me and are doing crazy things, and they never have that word linked to them. I am going to play football. I am not going to retaliate by any stretch of the imagination. I am going to play fast and physical football. But I am not going to back down.''
Finnegan and Johnson were each fined $25,000 for an on field fight midway through the fourth quarter of the Titans' loss to the Texans this past Sunday.
Finnegan put his hands to Johnson's face at the beginning of a play, after which each played ripped the other player's helmet off the opponent's head. Johnson punched Finnegan three times, while Finnegan made something of a show by not retaliating.
